Two and a Half Decades02.10.2013
In an industry where many years of experience can be a huge advantage, I often worry too much that being 25 puts me at a disadvantage. I had lunch with a dear friend recently, and I made an offhand comment about how I had always dreamed that by this age I would have accomplished so much more. She replied with the sweetest and most comforting response I could have imagined: “Yes, but look at all that you HAVE been able to accomplish!”
I know it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of comparing myself to others, my work to theirs, my interests to theirs… The list could get pathetically long very quickly, and as a result I might want to curl up under the covers until spring. However, the truth is that I should instead aim to be the best version of myself, and part of that is not being so hard on myself. So yes, although I don’t have decades of experience in wedding photography, my entire approach and photographic style is what sets me apart, not to mention an unabashed passion for documenting couples in love. I’m going to focus on that, cherish the last few months of being the big 2-5 (including a trip to Mexico with my little sister!), and I’m determined get out and get inspired!!
What a year it has been, and my new goal is to focus on being thankful, and at the same time I also need to cut myself some slack once in a while. It’s been a wonderful 25 years of life, and I have been so blessed to be able to pursue my dreams for over 3 years now. Now THAT is humbling. THAT is something to be thankful for, friends.
